John Kerry meeting with Iran and advising them to wait out Trump is, objectively, undermining current US foreign policy. I can’t support that. But the people most upset about it were happy with Tom Cotton doing something similar to Obama, so I can’t take their fury too seriously

Totally the same thing. Sure, Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world, is authoritarian, kills gays, and oppresses women, and is currently fighting off a revolution for freedom after Obama actively undermined the last efforts. But whatabout, right? Same.

Whataboutism tries to argue that X is okay because someone else did Y. Since I wrote that X is not okay, it could not possibly be whataboutism.

Insignificant portion of the concern expressed noted. Thank you for that clarification.

Obstructing normal foreign policy that is clearly in our best interest is different than obstructing a dangerous foreign policy from a POTUS who is clearly compromised by and a puppet of a hostile foreign power.

I really appreciate where you'rd coming from on this. But I just don't think normal standards apply any longer. We ditched those when we elected an abnormal government.

I just can't get upset at anyone trying to do the right thing-- whether by fighting fire with fire or by trying desperately to preserve norms by clinging to them. Ultimately, they aren't the problem. And ultimately, they have no good options.

The only way we solve this problem is by voting every last illiberal reactionary out of government and then prioritizing preservation of norms in future elections. But until then, we're fucked either way.

I understand your point, but I’m firmly in the camp that believes in fighting for the right thing in the right way. Might be a short-term disadvantage, but the seed shapes the tree.

Agreed, and agreed. America has become a laughing stock, and an unreliable negotiating partner, but the Repubs have no room for outrage given their past behavior.

Waiting out Trump is a no brainer option given the climate. Not sure how much you can undermine something by stating the obvious.

this is the same thing the transition team told Russia regarding Obama. He doesn’t have the authority to do this. Rogue.
