That's part of it. There's also a sort of cognitive dissonance--A powerful need among supporters (and a few detractors) to believe it's a carefully crafted, brilliantly executed strategy. The alternative is unsettling, especially if you've devoted yourself to supporting him.

Yes, I think a lot about how much one must have committed socially and psychologically to support him, and how much else you'd be willing to believe rather than have that whole structure taken away from you.

I've long been in the knee-jerk reaction camp, but I don't think the alternative explanation was unreasonable in 2016, or even 2017. There's a strategic effect, even if it wasn't carefully crafted in advance. But by this point, it's hard to see it as anything but impulse.

I agree - I don’t think he thinks far ahead, he just blurts. At the same time though he also knows they’re distractions the media will report. Same with his so-called policies - apparently doesn’t consult with his advisers - just spontaneously says it would be good to ...

I remember being a young Southern Baptist in the late 70s when there was a real push/strategy to get Evangelicals elected to public office starting at the local level and branching out.
