How did GOP go from Reagan's party of ideas to Trump's party of alternative facts?

Obama was a centrist who was heavily criticized by progressives for being centrist but selling himself as a progressive. In a sense, that is a fair criticism. You should probably advertise yourself as what you are. Most of the time, though, he made it clear that he was bipartisan

In 2008, I thought it was clear Obama was centrist. For example, I liked that he criticized the Iraq war while also pledging to go hard after al Qaeda. Some people blocked out the second part.
