Honest question: What's the difference between a politician "giving a speech" and a politician "lecturing"? What about Obama's speech made it "lecturing" rather than "arguing" or "campaigning"? Presumably, arguing or campaigning is ok, lecturing is not. What marks the difference?https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1038104127656484864 …

After Obama speaks, for whatever reason I hear cons talk about his didacticism, narcissism, and divisiveness. And I never hear it! I find it disturbing, epistemically. Why can't I hear it? In the speech yesterday, he seemed at some pains to say (in a way that would be...

unpalatable to many liberals) how we can't write off swathes of the country as racist or sexist, we can't refuse to engage or listen to Trump voters, how of course there are whites who are non-racist and blacks who care what happens to rural America. I...just didn't hear it!

I don't hear it either. I'm usually quite good at seeing critiques even if I don't agree with them--and I'm pretty sure I'm more critical of Obama's presidency than you are--but not in this case. Working on an article now related to this idea.

Can't wait to read it. I'm sure I am more positive on him but still usually good at seeing other side.

He goes into schoolmarm voice on occasion. Easier to notice it when it's something you disagree with him on. In this week's speech, the four minutes he spent blaming Millennials for Trump winning was Obama at his worst.

Thanks for the response. This is the first I've gotten that answers the question directly, rather than presuming ulterior/nefarious motives.

Lecturing, in the "listening to your dad rant at you" sense. It is an accurate term to use when you don't want to hear the message in the first place.

So it's not an objective distinction, but depends on the subjective opinions of the listener? That's possible. But if it's purely subjective, it's analytically useless, especially in the "how you got Trump" context. I'm curious if anyone can come up with an objective standard.

We're dealing with people who have limited emotional intelligence... much like children. When dad is "going on and on about stupid grown-up stuff," you get two possible responses-- tune out, or rebel. In this context, the latter is Shapiro's "how we got Trump."

Lecturing is when a black person thinks he has something important to say to white people.

If you agree with them they are “giving a speech” if you disagree or maybe even feel like they have some points that you know are correct but feel guilty about....thats “lecturing”.

To be bluntly honest, anything President Obama says is classified as a 'lecture' because he's a black man daring to tell white people what to do
