I do think Garland plus the behavior of Republicans in undermining the rule of law in the House and White House has contributed mightily.

I don't see how those could be irrelevant. They're not the only factors. And there's no way to measure exactly how much they're playing a role. But still.

Which he? French? No (based on his writings--I don't know him personally). Kavanaugh? Based on his writings and statements, there's a decent chance he does.

It is internal to the party. Organized, fostered by Schumer, et. al. They own it 100%, and continue to alienate the moderate middle.

They're responsible for their choices, no doubt. But it'd be a mistake to claim those choices happened in a vacuum.

Of course they didn't happen in a vacuum. They lost the presidency in 2016, and they are still trying to figure out a strategy in the wake of that surprise. Silly antics on display by Democrat leadership shows they have no clue how to proceed effectively.

It is telling how selective the memory of Never Trumpers is, when it comes to Kavanaugh. It's clear they still believe, on some level, that their interests are aligned, and they'll readily forgive all of Trump's enablers once he's gone. They have no credibility.
