Agreed, the protests and grandstanding were highly likely, no matter the nominee. But that doesn't dispute my point that Trump likely picked Kavanaugh over other names on the short-list because of Kavanaugh's views on executive power.

Absolutely agree on why he picked him. Just don't think he's any harder to confirm than any of the other short list options.

I see your point. Dems would've surely found a way to attack any nom. But the others didn't have the long paper trail from serving in the executive branch. Barrett in particular would've complicated identity politics attacks. Maybe fewer attacks would land with the public.
