That said “what *should* the US do about X?” is often making an unspoken, incorrect assumption that the US *can* do anything about a given situation. The historical record of “humanitarian interventions” is... not good.

The answer to "what should the US do about X?" could be "nothing." Or just "call out wrongdoers, express sympathy for victims." Also, I don't think there's ever been a pure humanitarian intervention. Always a strategic interest. That's how US picks some problems, but not others.
