Complaint that media was mean to McCain is nuts (whether or not you add "and this is why we got Trump") Overall, very positive. Perpetuated "maverick" brand. McCain joked media was his base. David Brooks called him McCain (R-media). Take a break from grievance-mongering for once.

Notion that the media was mean to McCain and that caused Trump is weirdly widespread, despite the fact that the media was much better to him than most other politicians (something McCain and prominent media figures readily acknowledged). 2/xhttps://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1034121680287744004 …

Yes, McCain was civil, got smeared, and lost. Romney was civil, got smeared, and lost. Then GOP nominated Trump. Gore was civil, got smeared, and lost. Kerry was civil, got smeared, and lost. Then Dems nominated Obama. Maybe causal factor isn't smears. 3/xhttps://twitter.com/JamesHasson20/status/1033848224954691585 …

Completely agree. A chunk of the base watched McCain be civil, get smeared, and lose. Then they watched Romney be civil, get smeared, and lose. So they concluded the nominee would be smeared regardless, norms didn’t matter, and only winning elections mattered. Enter Trump. https://twitter.com/neontaster/status/1033731428520001537 …

Of 21st century POTUS candidates, media covered Obama and McCain most positively (in that order). I'd argue they deserved it (relatively). You might disagree. Doesn't mean McCain wasn't criticized. Smeared even. Of course he was. He was running for president. 4/x

FFS, take some personal responsibility. Republicans had many options in 2016. Multiple people of integrity. Chose Trump anyway. It's not because political opponents and media figures were mean to McCain and Romney. It's because Republican voters wanted Trump. 5/x

I don't doubt that many Republicans believe that harsh public criticism of McCain and Romney made them vote Trump. But that's an excuse. A shirking of responsibility. And it's pathetic. 6/x

"Some people were mean to me, so I had to do something terrible to everyone" is a supervillain origin story, not a reasoned political argument. You're adults. Citizens. Voters. Own your choices. (END)

If you mean McCain and Romney 'got smeared' as 'Obama won by a large margin', okay. If you mean 'they had unfounded accusations levied against' them, fuck that.

I mean there were negative things said about them in public, including in the press, and that these things were comparable to negative things said about other presidential candidates.

'By the press' I can appreciate, though 'comparable' I would disagree, depending on the comparison. The press didn't seem to do much about the Swiftboat vileness against Kerry, Obama's birth and so much more.

Yeah, that's my point. Kerry coverage was harsh. Besides swift boat, there were tons of photos both awkward (attempting to hunt) and out-of-touch (windsurfing). Doesn't mean it was inaccurate. But definitely not positive. This didn't force Dems to vote for a terrible person.
