I'll allow it. (I liked this piece when you first wrote it, and shared it. But
@travis_view's point struck me. I can't think of another big conspiracy theory in which the cabal manipulating events behind the scenes are the good guys). -
yeah, it's super weird. i think that cognitive dissonance + a need to preserve one's ego is a big part. the hypothesis that this was a grift that succeeded to well doesn't change the fact that many people believe it sincerely!
-
There's some neat research on cults showing how even people you'd think would know better stick with it, because the alternative is a huge an ego blow. Most people think they're too smart to fall for a con. Hard to admit to yourself you're not, especially if you sacrificed for it

it also makes them feel like they are a part of the deep state that they lament. it makes them feel like they have insider knowledge. that they are the code breakers. it is giving meaning to people's lives and it is pathetic.
-
There's a lot of that going around. At the risk of both sidesing this somewhat, I've seen quite a few "we're in the know and part of the vanguard" from anti-Trump online groups. Mueller has him with Putin on tape! He's resigning this week! Etc., etc.
-
agreed... but one side isn't diving deep into numerology or trying to decipher codes from literal nonsense... there are psychological tricks in the Qanon conspiracies that are uniquely dangerous.
-
Seeing patterns in noise is a widespread human problem. (Well, not always a problem, eg. can be fun to look at clouds). But yes, I agree, QAnon has taken that phenomenon to a ridiculous degree, and more than others.
-
it's already moved beyond a "conspiracy theory." idk if its too strong to call it a "movement" but people are invested into this commercially. i dont know what it means when there is a large number of our citizenry that is being mobilized through decentralized & anonymous comms.

It’s that apocalyptic mindset as well. People who secretly want to end it all but don’t want to die alone. The world must die w/ them

it’s also a way to see divine judgement on their enemies- the god-leopard would never eat their faces
& fearful people are easier to cntrl -
Liked for reference to Leopards Eating Faces party.

It's a pity that Trump voters really believes in a lot of Q's...QAnon & QUISLINGS QUACKS who betrayed
...Trump, GOP, DonJr, Kushner, Manafort. The danger is for others w/nefarious reason to manipulate the conspiracy believers.
