But isn’t government money spent that everyone benefits from, Democratic Socialism, as long as they are FOR it ( hence the Democratic part) ??
-
-
-
That's too generic. You basically described government spending in a democracy. Democratic socialism is a political ideology, advocating government spending on specific things in pursuit of specific goals.
-
Sure, but what if my goal, was, say, a National Highway System. Or Medicare for All. Tell me how you can parse which one is Dem Soc ???
-
Medicare for All would move the country significantly to the left, raising both taxes and government spending by a lot and increasing gov's control of a big part of the economy. A National Highway System is the status quo and uncontroversial. The former's DemSoc, the latter's not
-
That’s not fair. We’re debating MFA now. If I was proposing the NHS today you’d say it was crazy too. My point is that they are BOTH Dem Socialism. If the support was at 30% and they still did it, difft argument.
-
I don't see value in classifying all government spending on the public as democratic socialism. Then there's nothing distinguishing about democratic socialists. The specifics matter. They don't want to govern like Eisenhower. They want to make America more like Denmark.
-
Agreed. But I feel like that’s a different argument. And classifications still matter, because we need to figure out what is helpful to everybody, versus helpful for a few. Welfare, college tuition - few. HC for All - everyone.

In case you didn't notice,
#FDR was a#DemocraticSocialist Our Gov works best when it focuses on the#PublicGood, like@NatlParkService. Remember the#WPA of the#GreatDepression?#StudyHistory@Ocasio2018@SenWarren@CynthiaNixon@SenSanders@BeschlossDC@DorisKGoodwin -
The idea of national parks goes back to the mid 19th century, and their biggest champion was Teddy Roosevelt. There's no centrist movement to get rid of them. Enjoying national parks is a mainstream, largely apolitical position.
-
There may be no movement to eliminate
#NationalParks, but@realDonaldTrump has made it easier to mine the natural resources contained within/reduced the size of some parks. This is NOT#TheAmericanWayhttps://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2018/02/28/trumps-mining-giveaway-000645 … -
This moves from my point about classification (what is and is not democratic socialism?) to one about policy (should we make it easier to mine natural resources in national parks?) The latter's a legitimate question. But it's tangential to the point I'm making.
-
I see your distinction between classification & policy. My point is
#FDR helped America survive b/c his policy choices came from same mindset as@Ocasio2018 &@SenSanders. And at least re: the environment,#TeddyRoosevelt thought like them too:#OneAmericanFamily#TheAmericanWay

Are you familiar with Mises? If a blog post from them, written in 2007, is the counter-evidence, my argument's really strong.

Let’s start jamming together other words we like as labels for unrelated things we also like: Localism = Soviet Federalism. Farm-to-table = Gluten-free Commissariat. Command Economy = Labor Justice. Ressentiment = Class Consciousness
