I’ve been in this situation and stated an opinion that didn’t fit with the orthodoxy against which my friend was arguing(ie- “yes, it was awful that Obama uses drone strikes..”) and he threw up his hands and asked “what team I was even on.” It’s like I was cheating or something.

I know what you mean. Sometimes, I confess to testing the waters by posting quotes like, "The Democrats kill people before they're born, and the Republicans kill them after they're born." A generalization, of course, but it's sure to push a few buttons.

There's nothing sweeter than the gaze of a tyrant, especially if it's in HD. Media, specifically social media, internalizes in users the habits of the machine. Effectively it puts the possibility of an audience on to every thought & it rewards thoughts which make good tweets.
