Why Are Internet Radicals Helping Putin's Russia? In my latest article, I look into @ggreenwald and @caitoz's vehement Russia scandal skepticism. They're not paid or co-opted Russian agents. But they're still advancing Russia's preferred narrative. Why?https://arcdigital.media/why-are-internet-radicals-helping-putins-russia-6ff2978b172e …

One fun thing about criticizing Glenn Greenwald is the comments. Me, in the article: Critics accuse Greenwald of being a paid Russian agent but “that’s conspiratorial nonsense.” Comment: “Keep up the fine work Grossman, being a lying establishment shill pays very well I’m sure”

Sorry, Greenwald helped Snowden, a Russian agent, escape capture. I am awaiting his indictment. Occam’s Razor. The simplest explanation is often the right one.

I disagree, both on Snowden (a quintessential internet radical) and Greenwald. They’ve acted on their convictions, not on behalf of the Russian government. But their actions help Russia and other authoritarians.

Explain Snowden’s soft landing in Russia? Explain Greenwald’s continued skepticism of the Russian/Trump conspiracy against the US? Greenwald is on not one but every Russian talking point.

I think that’s a much better explanation than paid/co-opted agent of a foreign government.

Snowden was not the man he was fed to us to be. In the fullness of time it will all come out. Can’t get my head around an anti-government guy taking the jobs he did. Can’t believe he felt he was helping the American public. The wounds are deep and inflicted by an enemy.

Amen! For those of us watching these events unfold over 2016, it is bizarre for anyone to claim the issue as manufactured to succor a loss that hadn't happened yet.

That's a good point. Especially because when the accusations against Russia first surfaced during the campaign, most people thought Hillary was going to win.

Why are people conflating two separate issues: Russian Meddling did not; 1. change votes 2. affect outcome. I posit that campaigns are about changing minds, thus change votes and affect outcomes. So, if a campaign changes minds, how can we say it didn’t affect outcome?

We don't know. Maybe without any Russian interference Hillary would have won. Maybe she would have still lost by the same margin. Maybe Trump would've won by more (perhaps some NatSec Republicans who rejected him would've stayed on board). Impossible to know, one way or the other

We know the goal of campaigns is to change minds & consequently votes. I want to be clear, hacking to change votes is not the same as obfuscating to change minds. Unless one can show that Russian campaign changed no minds, i find it hard to believe outcome didn’t change.

Russia literally made it illegal to be gay. I am appalled that Greenwald, a gay man, would help a regime that is not only homophobic but actually promotes hate crimes against LGBT people.

America has enough problems. Tangled, complex, overwhelming. We've not even begun to address them. We don't need a Manchurian President as the cherry on top.
