Had dinner with friend from Turkey. Talked about Erdogan and Democratic backsliding. Not feeling great. Signs were there a year and a half in, but he didn’t really do it until year 4 or 5. Of course it can happen here. Of course it can. If it doesn’t, it’s because people stop it.

And if nothing ever happens then alarmists give themselves credit for stopping it, whether it was going to happen or not.

No doubt. That’s how it goes for any possible problem that doesn’t materialize. Did it not happen because the concern was overstated? Or did it not happen because the concern prompted a response that stopped it? Often impossible to know.

No offense, but Alex Jones and David Icke have been using this argument for decades. "Our alarmism prevented that thing we told you was going to happen that didn't happen". However, the UN was warned about the situation in Rwanda and did nothing.

None taken. I acknowledge it’s difficult to determine empirically. After all, we’re talking about things that didn’t happen.

But people are also profiting from the fear orgy, and whipping up hysteria. And it's going to get people killed.

I don't think people realize what helped erdogan win all the power in turkey: making his close circle of billionaires acquire media corporations and threatening the rest. to avoid the same, people should pay attention to the media corporations in usa.

Increasing control over the press and judiciary are typical features of democratic backsliding. In addition to Turkey, you can see it in Poland, Hungary, and Russia.

one thing particular about turkey is, major media networks are parts of large corporations which are also engaged in gov subsidized billion-dollar infrastructure projects. it's a win-win situation for both sides.

People tried to stop it in Turkey. They were rounded up and jailed. It does seem Trump is following Erdogan’s play book.

The parallels are chilling. The most direct to me are their pandering to religious fundamentalists. That is a very reliable & fervent base prone to cults of personality.
