I am convinced that these guys are sticking around primarily to defend the institutions out of a sense of noblesse oblige.

That’s basically A, and it’s my main guess too. What’s uncertain is how much they’re defending the institutions, and how much they’re inadvertently undermining them by lending their prestige to an administration that’s undermining them deliberately.

d) They too are in Putin's/Trump's pocket in lesser but still compromising ways. And they've been told everything Trump says is just "for show" (for media/public), means nothing.
