Yeah, if Bork didn't go out of his way to antagonize Senators and get into ideological arguments, he probably would've been confirmed. But it's still the first case of a Supreme Court nominee blocked on explicitly ideological grounds. Things devolved from there.

You could argue the GOP Senate filibustering Fortas' nomination to Chief Justice was really the first ideological salvo of modern times. But looking back through some history of people getting shot down, we've been declining judges for ideological reasons the whole time
