It's not "everyone else is civil, you should be too." (Obviously). It's that Trump has led public discourse in a baser direction, and whether it's smarter to rise above that or to fight fire with fire remains an open question.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. There's a sort of survivor bias, a selection effect where successful mass actions get remembered by history, while the many failures don't.

I don't think any movement has retained civility completely, especially not any successful one. The question is always how far is too far?
