Trump's family separation and child internment prompted comparisons to Nazis. But American civil society and public institutions--democracy's immune system--responded. That's why US won't go fascist. But democratic backsliding is a serious risk. My latest:https://arcdigital.media/reaction-to-family-separation-policy-shows-why-america-wont-go-fascist-631877e1d30d …

I mean, there is still dissent and there are some functioning institutions resisting the program, because this hasn't reached its end stage yet if that's what you're saying. However nothing has knocked it off course by any means, we are headed in a terrifying direction.
-
That’s basically what I argue in the article.

The title says America "won't go fascist". I am saying America is already fascist. It's a process that occurs in stages, but it certainly doesn't appear to be reversing itself. IMHO it is accelerating under Trump in pretty obvious ways.
-
It's not already fascist. If it were, the 2018 midterms wouldn't happen--or they'd be clearly rigged and boycotted by the Democrats--some prominent media figures would be in jail, etc. If your point is the US has slid in an authoritarian direction and could further, then we agree

The list of characteristics of fascism I responded with weren't untrue one day and true the next about any of the fascist states it's based on. These policies ramped up over years, and work in tandem. Absence of the totality of fascism in early stages doesn't mean it's reversible
