Political parties ≠ sports teams. Treating them as sports teams--my team rocks, your team sucks--is a big reason we're in this mess. Much worse to switch from Red Sox to Yankees than from Republicans to Democrats. Sports fandom is tribal. Politics is about ideas. Or should be.https://twitter.com/secupp/status/1009432789714956289 …

Believe me, I get the frustration. But this...makes no sense. It’s like a disheartened Red Sox fan saying “That’s it, I’m rooting for the Yankees.” If, you know, the Yankees were for higher taxes, big government, abortion and gun bans. https://twitter.com/steveschmidtses/status/1009325255142207488 …

Ronald Reagan famously said "I didn't leave the Democratic party. The Democratic party left me." Now the Republican party left. If you like the Trumpified version, support it. But don't support it no matter what it does just because of sports-fan-like team loyalty.

Much agreement here. Sports teams don’t make policy, are probably based on where you live, and you don’t elect the players. I’ll never understand people staying loyal to a name if they no longer recognize it. I used to be an R for the policy, not the name: easy to leave.

I’ve never understood people who vote for a candidate solely based on whether they have a (D), (R), or (I), etc. I’ve always chosen the candidate (and party) with the better policy platform & experience each election. It’s simple.

Parties are helpful for organizing etc, but I agree. Regardless of how I’m registered (or not) I vote for what I think is best.
