27% of Americans (and 46% of Republicans) support separating families at the border as a deterrent. Based on 240M eligible voters, that's 65M who favor hurting kids to punish parents and send a signal to others. Even excusing away low-information reflexive partisans, that's a lothttps://twitter.com/samstein/status/1008504611290976261 …

We polled Trump's family separation policy. We even asked if it was appropriate to do it "in order to discourage others from crossing the border illegally.” 27% agreed, 56% disagreed https://www.thedailybeast.com/poll-republicans-approve-of-trumps-family-separation-policy …

27% of Americans approve of what the UN has already said is a human rights violation. Cool cool

Hurting kids to punish parents is the basis for a lot of GOP economic policies, too

100% of the @GOP supporting this loathsome policy also claim to be God-fearing Christians. Well, they better be a’fearing now bc I’m guessing Paul is not going to be too sympathetic to the “we hurt them because it’s the law” argument

For the record, the crime of trying to cross the border is a misdemeanor. Like petty theft, possession of under an ounce of pot, trespassing, vandalism. Why is the right not demanding we take children from these law breakers, too. We are a nation of laws, after all.

Better to let that sink in, a good long time, and consider the implications. I will offer one possible explanation from George Orwell’s 1984 (next tweet)

What is the purpose of our border? And is there some kind of upper limit or criteria of who we want to enter the country?
