Have you seen some of the responses? Evidently, this is very upsetting to some people. An online subculture uses the phrase "radical centrist" to mean "thing I don't like." Sort of like "neoliberal."
-
Your failure to believe that the word "neoliberal" means something is the more likely culprit here.

Centrism is the centre of two polar ideologies. If those ideologies are both considerably more popular than what is represented by centrism, then it becomes the fringe ideology. Simple.
-
Centrism isn't an ideology like conservatism and liberalism though. The only driving force is moderation. How can an ideology be comprised of two opposite ideologies? That doesn't make sense. Also, you'll find independents outnumber both leftists and rightists.
-
"Independent" does not mean centrist tho

Centrists pursue a perceived center, rather than actually occupying the center and often reach conclusions that both sides hate. Furthermore, self-described centrists and moderates often hold a mix of extreme views from the left and the right.
-
Radical centrists essentially see the golden mean fallacy as a goal.

The "center" in "centrism" does not refer to how "mainstream" something is, but rather, its position with respect to such things as economic freedom, social egalitarianism/socioeconomic hierarchy, etc.
-
... Good god, are you really an international relations professor at a university? Yikes.
