This Canada nonsense is a great example of the giant national security exemption loophole. Under no rational logic is Canada a national security threat. But, technically, POTUS doesn't need to justify it besides saying the words "national security."https://twitter.com/NGrossman81/status/1004347483957481472 …

The Canada nonsense also illustrates a problem with the media and American discourse. The story is Trump unnecessarily harming US-Canada relationship--and how it fits a pattern of unnecessarily isolating the US from allies out of ignorance, ego, and pique--not the details of 1812

And Congress! You pathetic, sycophantic cowards. Constitution gives you the power to regulate trade. Congress ceded a lot of this power to the White House, and could reclaim it any time, but instead stands aside as POTUS abuses the national security exemption, hurting the country

This is great. A bipartisan Senate bill to rein in the president's abuse of the national security exemption for tariffs. Look at that list. Rs and Ds, including some from states suffering under retaliatory tariffs. Deserves veto-proof support. We'll see.https://twitter.com/eschor/status/1004443980686348289 …

Best argument for "national security" tariffs against Canada and Mexico is it improves US negotiating position. But that highlights why it's a such bad idea: Potential economic gains minimal, potential geopolitical losses high.

Trade war with Canada and Mexico such short-sighted thinking. US gains much more from close, long-term partnerships with neighbors than bullying them into making a few economic concessions. And that’s if it works! Right now, just losses for all three countries.

North America is deteriorating. Trump’s verbal attacks on Mexico, US withdrawing from TPP, now tariffs. First big post-Trump Mexican election July 1. This’ll get worse before it gets better.

WTF Canada didn't exist until 1867 (Confederation) Canada wasn't a British colony, Canada as such didn't exist. It was the British who burned the White House down in the War of 1812. BTW for grudges in the past should Britain then hate the United States for the Revolutionary War?

Heck, if we're going back into the history of Canada's military exploits, why not go back 74 years today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_Beach

Actually x3, it was payback for the American burning of the legislature in Toronto in 1813.

And it's a good bet
#FailedPresident just learned about the War of 1812 yesterday. -
Trump knows it was called the War of 1812 but he probably doesn't know when it started.
