The theory that the president of the United States has no idea what a trade deficit is remains in pole position.

He keeps proving that. And he has no clue how tariffs work either. He thinks they represent money coming into America from afar. But they are of course paid by the importers, in USA, and hence are a cost to American consumers.

Can some one please inform the president that he has a trade deficit with his hair stylist and that most people in America have trade deficits with their local grocery store

Many people have tried explaining this using analogies like yours. It doesn't work.

the problem is among other things is that he has the zero sum mindset of a real estate developer and has never grown out of that mindset

I smack my head every time I hear him spout his nonsense about trade deficits. Unbelievable to me that people just continue to go along with whatever Dear Leader says

It’s not even what it is, but what it means. If you gain even one new customer, the deal might be worth it. It’s not about 2=2.

I firmly believe he thinks foreign governments pay the tariff. I also have zero doubt he can coherently explain his reasoning why he thinks trade deficits are bad. Economically illiterate

        1. It is no longer just a theory 2. A "Roy Cohn" approach to international relations does not work; it makes you weaker. 3. The "flattery will get you anywhere" #POTUS will eventually cave in 4. What do @stevenmnuchin1 & @SecretaryRoss whisper in his ear?

He lies about stuff he does not know ,namely with"Canada is currently our 2nd largest goods trading partner with $544.0 billion (two-way) trade. Goods exports totalled $266.0 billion; goods imports totalled $278.1 billion. The U.S. goods trade deficit with Canada was $12.1."
