There are several reasons to say this about this Vikings/Atlanta game. It was because it WAS so close. ToMN, it was a given that they'd win. A FG kicker that hadn't missed in 2 years missed, when they should've gone for the TD and not the FG. You're missing the whole point.
The thing you forget is the Falcons were the #2 seed at 14-2 so it's not like they were terrible. It was an upset yes but to say it was one of the biggest is a joke. The loss by a 15-1Packers to a 9-7 Giants team in the Divisional round is far more of an upset and it's not close
Upset of a different nature. More personal for MN based on their own expectations?
A piece of Marshall Erickson’s father died that day.
Funny how another Vikings kicker would blow a playoff game years later
I never understood why that ATL team never got the Love they deserved. They were 14-2 that year. Not really that huge of an upset. They were a really good team.
And they had just beaten a terrific 12 win 49ERS team a week earlier
Yep. The Niners team with Owens, Rice and Young that beat the Packers in “The Catch 2” game.
Offense was a machine that year. Young led league in touchdowns and Hearst had over 1500 rushing
Never ever post this again.
Falcons had no business winning this game. I truly believe if Minnesota wins this game they beat John Elway and the Broncos in SB 33. Superbowl was over by halftime wasn't even fun to watch.
They had "no business" winning? What does that even mean? As they say, that's why they play. 15-1 MN, 14-2 ATL, it's not like ATL was a sub .500 team. The Vikings were overconfident and got kicked in the teeth for it. It's a good lesson.
Not overconfident, they just had a terrible head coach but were talented enough to be 15-1 in spite of him. They had the ball with :30 left and took a knee to go to OT. Inexcusable not to throw it deep a couple times to Randy Moss. Proof Denny Green was an idiot
Those are the actions I'm calling overconfident. Sounds like the right term to me, but it's open to interpretation. Not playing all of your time on the field and taking that knee meant he didn't think he needed it. Maybe it wasn't the whole team's mindset, but def the coach's.
Randall Cunningham was not overconfident, he couldn’t handle the big stage and vomited all over himself. Got so bad the following season he benched himself
I did clarify that to perhaps coaches/play-callers. Probably some of the players, as attitudes like that rub off a bit, but the staff can take the blame. Overconfident is the only way to describe several of the decisions that were made.
