Exactly how like our Earth is an Earth-like planet? We take a look at ; a website where you can explore how sensitive a planet’s surface environment may be to even tiny changes from conditions at home.

Thousands of kilometres below the Earth surface exist minerals that can only be formed at high pressure. But if these cannot be found on the Earth’s surface, where do we get specimens?

When the first Star Wars movie came outing 1977, scientists had no idea if worlds like Tatooine could really exist. Now, we have discovered multiple worlds that orbit two suns and has just spotted another one.

The real question —says Tony Del Genio —is how different a planet can be from Earth and still maintain liquid water. Del Genio started his career expecting to be an engineer. He became a leader in climate modelling of worlds beyond our Earth.

The young Mars supported periods of liquid water, but was this sufficient for life to arise on the red planet? Yasuhito Sekine discusses the properties of Martian water and how clues may be found in the disposal of radioactive waste on Earth!

While conditions on the Saturn moon of Titan are far far colder than on Earth, the surface may be the most like our planet within the Solar System. And now, we’ve mapped the whole moon.

Did the Nobel Committee make an error tantamount to scientific plagiarism? When Michel Mayor & Didier Queloz were announced as the winners for the discovery of 51 Pegasi b, the results displayed on the screen weren’t actually from their group.

“There is a real possibility that the team will find itself attempting to evaluate a potential biosignature on Mars in the next five years,” —, PI of PIXL (image) on NASA’s Mars 2020 rover. But such a task is going to be far from easy.

This week Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the first exoplanet around a sun-like star. We take a look at the story of these scientists and the competition to find worlds outside our Solar System.

As with the first exoplanets, the discovery of the first possible exomoon Kepler-1625b-i defied our theories of how these worlds are formed. But now we might have a new mechanism for building giant moons out of the cores of gas giants.

NASA's Mars 2020 rover will be looking for signs of ancient life, but can we recognise the evidence? Scientists put this to the test in Greenland, where a controversial claim places the evidence for the earliest life on Earth.

Like Trappist-1 & Proxima Centauri b, planets orbiting dim red dwarf stars are usually small. But a new discovery of two gas giant planets around the red dwarf GJ 3512 means rarer planet formation routes need to be explored to explain this surprise.

“What we do is treat DNA as a fossil, a vehicle to travel back in time."-- Fossilised remains have long been used to unpick evolutionary history, but Betül Kaçar explores ancient life by focusing on genetic material preserved in organisms today.
