Designed and built at by a team that includes Eberly's Suvrath Mahadevan , Jason Wright , Fred Hearty, and Joe Ninan, the exoplanet-hunting instrument has made its first observations at ✨

We announced first light with NEID! A pleasure working with the amazing & talented multi-institutional NEID team to go from design to first light in less than 4 years. Lots still to do in commissioning the instrument and facility- but this this a major first step!

A / exoplanet exploration project ramps up with and its NIST-built etalon reference (which filters light with a cavity that only certain frequencies can pass through).

First light spectrum of 51 Pegasi as captured by on of . This image shows the light from the star, highly dispersed by NEID, from short wavelengths (bluer colors) to long wavelengths (redder colors).

NEID came out of the 2010 Decadal Survey recommendations and a competitive open call for proposals for an instrument for the WIYN 3.5m telescope on Kitt Peak. Reminder of power of letting people propose - opens to new groups ideas and successes not imagined.

now tells us about first light for the NEID Doppler spectrograph. This instrument will allow extreme precision radial velocity measurements, enabling us to detect planets from their gravitational tugs on their host stars.

Congrats to team (PI Suvrath Mahadevan) on 1st light for new -finding spectrograph on at , a joint project! showing 1st light spectra of 51 Peg @

For 1st light, NEID looked at 51Peg in memory of that first discovery & to commemorate last year’s Nobel prize. This is a national facility and anyone may propose to use this new instrument on this great middle aged scope. Commissioning should be completed this year.

NEID got its first stellar (non solar) spectra last night on the star 51 Pegasi, around which now Nobel Laureate and Michel Mayor found an exoplanet in 1992 - the first exoplanet around a Sun like star. First spectra below showing the Ca IR triplet and Na doublet.

(1/n) NEID's first on-sky spectrum! We see the three fibers illuminated. There is the etalon source in the cal fiber (top) and a blue sky spectrum in our science (middle) and sky (fiber). One can see the pesky telluric (absorption) lines in the sky spectrum as dark bands.

The NEID detector CCD has been cooled down using Liquid Nitrogen, and is alive and ready to go! Click on the image below to see a 2-D spectrum of the etalon through one of our three High Resolution fibers. This picket fence pattern provides for a stable calibration reference.

Watching the from the McMath Pierce 2.1m Solar telescope is definitely one way to do it! After 2 hours of overcast disappointment, the Sun finally shone through!
