The econ depts at both Harvard and MIT are dominated by, well, Harvard and MIT. 60% of Harvard Econ faculty have a PhD from one of the two schools while 56% of MIT Econ faculty do. Both depts have only one faculty member with a non-North American PhD (excl. LSE and Oxbridge). 3/pic.twitter.com/bFqsZfVn5P
Some other fun facts: Less than 4% of faculty members in these top 10 departments have a PhD from outside the top 100 departments. 4/pic.twitter.com/EKyrx282ox
Out of the nearly 500 faculty members in these 10 departments, only one has a PhD from an institution outside of North America or Europe. 5/pic.twitter.com/6ED8YWYswc
The University of Chicago Economics Department has only three women faculty members. 6/pic.twitter.com/sJ1l4n6cfH
So where does this leave us? Obviously mainstream economics is incredibly insular and completely dominated by certain programmes, ideas, and ways of operating. This is not a surprise, but it's nevertheless a situation worthy of more detailed examination. 7/
Mapping out the workings of this elite reproduction across the entire discipline would, among other things, probably shed light on the failings of mainstream economics outlined in @davidgraeber's review of @RSkidelsky's book 'Money and Government'. https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2019/12/05/against-economics/ … 8/
It might be interesting to see where the faculty in 2nd tier econ departments get their phds. If I remember correctly none of my profs in Econ at UW-Seattle came from top 10 and that was a conscious decision. I think this has been going on long enough that it's become factional.
Yeah, it would be interesting to map it out further across the discipline. I think there would be some differences between North America and Europe, but I still think the top 10 or 20 would dominate. There are a few hub of heterdox econ, sometimes in business schools even.
Great thread! Interesting analysis. Superb, eye opener!!!
