    NCTC preserves bacteria from unexpected sources - like NCTC 13833, type strain of Staphylococcus muscae isolated from the body surface of a stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans. No idea why! It’s whole genome sequence data is available here:

    The type strain (1st described of species) of Staphylococcus simiae was isolated from faeces of a South American Squirrel Monkey in Olomouc Zoo, Czech Republic, 2004. It was included in the NCTC3000 project, it’s whole sequence is here:

    NCTC has had five homes: Chelsea (1920-39); Elstree (1939 -49); ‘Old Colindale’ (1949-85); New Colindale’ (1985-2011); South Mimms (2011-15) and ‘New Colindale’ again from 2015. The bacterial strains were kept safe throughout.

    NCTC 2012 is a strain of Clostridium botulinum (type A) isolated from wild duck paste in 1922. It’s original strain reference is Loch Maree & it’s been preserved in the collection since it was deposited in 1925. 8 deaths were attributed to this strain ⁦

    In the 1930s phages were used to treat everything from dysentery to UTI’s & skin infections. Post penicillin, Eastern European researchers continued using phages & now penicillin is less effective phages are back in the news. NCTC has some available for research

    2019 science: Prometheoarchaeum syntrophicum strain MK-D1 belongs to the Asgard group of archaea & may be a precursor of eukaryotes. Culturing an Asgard & sequencing its DNA confirmed it carries eukaryotic genes. The missing link? ⁦⁦

    The 1st ever batch of NCTC cultures sent to a 3rd party included NCTC 2, 3 & 6, all strains of Shigella flexneri sent to Graylingwell Mental Hospital, Chichester on 7th Jan 1920. That hospital was closed in 2001. NCTC still going strong though. ⁦
