I'm thrilled to announce my debut as a published author with my short story "An Udder Catastrophe" about cows and self-driving cars, in this absolutely amazing collection. Thanks so much to & for this opportunity!

  2. It's also important to build an intuition of how the model works - what are expected outputs and predictions? What variables/factors have increased importance in the final predictions?

  3. Absolutely fantastic insight in Q&A - designers need to be involved with model inputs - who annotates the training dataset? What is the process? How representative is it? The quality of model input affects quality of model output & therefore the user experience

  4. It depends on context and the user's own technical knowledge. If the prediction system is for a life-death situation like a disease diagnosis then it's important to show the confidence. However, if it's for something like music recommendation then it's not so necessary.

  5. Very interesting talk by and at on designing AI products. Most interesting insight - what makes these products different is that they make predictions but they might be uncertain. How do we depict confidence in a prediction to a user?

  6. The biggest challenge is that the user interface is now integrated with user's environment/context. What are different ways in which we can design these interfaces to maximize success, and minimise distraction/accidents while traversing the environment?

  7. Great talk by and on design challenges for mixed/augmented reality at - while they represent a new way of interacting with computers that is different from the affordances of screens/mobile devices

  8. Most interesting to me was how he uses the concept of "anti-personas" like the "snooping mother" and "vengeful-ex husband" in the design process to help include safeguards for user's privacy and security

  9. Great talk by one of my design heroes at about designing services with robots involved. Safety, privacy, displaying robot intent, cooperation and movement between humans and robots…all of these need to be considered when adding robots to services..

"I know you from Twitter" - Embarrassing for everyone involved - Humiliating - Too online "Your reputation precedes you" - Cool and scary - Mysterious - Potentially ominous - Old-timey villian

Reminds me of 's book in all the wrong ways - the designer who built this feature remains unnamed and unaccountable despite the tremendous harm they have caused with this feature. Who would build something like this with a clear conscience?!

The problem is not making technology more human, the problem is making people who develop technology understand humans and humanity.

Okay, looks like this is going to be a thread on journalism that talks about design - here's this fantastic article on how the infinite scroll is melting our brains

How might we create a way for first time/next billion users to access the internet on their own terms? I remember this talk by and as very thought provoking in this regard:

The reality is that we've created a new generation of internet users who access the internet purely through walled gardens (facebook, youtube, tiktok) and are under perpetual surveillance. This is the saddest consequence of the rise of social media platforms.
