    Want to connect with grad student sociologists trying to break into the public sphere? I’m putting together an email list and Twitter list. Let me know if you want on either one—or both!

    Pres says it's frustrating to see policies implemented that, if media & lawmakers had just talked to a sociologist, would be scrapped as bad ideas! So let's get our work out there into the public sphere.

    A clarification: the reporting requirement is a broad one. As long as you told someone with a formal institutional affiliation (e.g., a professor, an anonymous report form), you should still be eligible to participate.

    Dear academics, A tweet is not an 8k word peer reviewed article. It can’t have a lit review or flesh out every nuance/debate. What it can do is provide folks who might not have access to the academy an entry point to learn about their history and society.

    I shall continue my practice of discussing this every time right before they fill out evaluations.

    Simply telling college students that there is gender bias in student evals is enough to reduce that bias, according to a new PLoS One study. Language used in the experimental condition is in the screenshot. Full article (open access):

    I’ll add that this doesn’t absolve cis-men from having conversations about abortion and supporting women’s and trans folks’ bodily autonomy. We just don’t want you setting our agenda. Elevate our voices. Use your privilege to get people to listen to US.

    Both rape and forced pregnancies can cause trauma. The violence inflicted on the both through rape or a forced pregnancy can be brutal--even lethal.

    Both rape and forced pregnancies dehumanize victims (who are usually women) into nothing more than their sexual organs, seeing them as rightfully belonging to either a rapist or a fetus with no consideration for the person attached to them.

    The reason so many people--even many people who are otherwise anti-choice--support abortion in cases of rape is because rape is a heinous and particularly violent violation of bodily autonomy. The reality is that forced pregnancy is too.
