In the wake of the movement, there are a lot of academics starting to study sexual violence for the first time. (Welcome!) I've been doing a lot of peer reviews and I see the same mistakes that mark you as a newcomer. Here's a checklist to avoid the obvious ones:

Why might undocumented immigrants fear legalization & legal status? In , I show how immigrants view legal status as a double-edged sword—both offering protection from deportation & heightening fears of surveillance & punishment.

This is big! Survivors are winning court cases and more universities could be held accountable for steering students survivors away from reporting.

Correction: There could soon be MORE evidence that Trump is a rapist. Survivors’ statements about what happened to them are evidence too!

That means that anyone working in a patriarchal country can share strategies for combatting violence. Scholars should seek out feminist work from other countries!

Such a wonderful roundtable discussion this morning at ! The takeaway from our discussion? The problems facing anti-violence advocates are not all that different across national contexts—in patriarchal countries, we’re all combatting the patriarchy.

It’s worth reaching out to the feminist named to check in and offer support. It’s tough out there for feminist academics! And it’s especially hard when the threats are coming from inside the house.

Point is—whatever your profession, there’s a good chance you work alongside a misogynist troll. If you hear someone talking bad about a feminist colleague, they might be doing more than just talking to you.

If we won’t, they make it harder for us to succeed. They spread rumors through our professional networks. They intimidate. They exert all their power to maintain their own workplace as a space for (usually white) men.

I don’t think academia or law are more sexist fields than most. But I do think the trolls in our own professions (or adjacent fields) have their own motivations for trolling us. Namely, they want the feminists to quit.

When I say persistent, I don’t mean they send the most mean Twitter comments. I mean the trolls who find my email address and start sending me angry rants or the trolls who seek out my physical address to send packages. The ones who take it to another level.

People always assume that the misogynist Internet trolls are nerdy white guys tweeting from their parents’ basement. That hasn’t been experience. My most persistent trolls are prestigiously employed as academics or criminal defense attorneys.

Sociologists! I remember a thread last year about recommendations for submitting to ASA, but can't remember the specific tip about the order for ranked choices: is it regular sessions or section sessions first?
