In Canada it’s a minimum 30 day “cooling period” then it’s anywhere from 2-4 months after that before a license is issued. And that’s for a hunting rifle/shotgun nonnrestricted. It seems to work pretty good

That's exactly right. In Australia semi automatics are illegal and very expensive on the black market. How many grumpy teenagers can pay $30K for a gun? Once you have that money you can just go travelling or something.

AT style guns are already expensive, half a grand is the cheapest they come, 30 grand is already not unheard of. Plus, unlike Australia, we have a huge supply, more supply, cheaper cost.
