  1. in 1994, Japan launched its first H-II booster a rocket entirely developed in Japan! This first H-II booster's purpose was to obtain heat-resistant structural data, aerodynamic and aerodynamic heating data, and more pertaining to re-entry

  2. Clyde Tombaugh on his birthday! Born near Streator Illinois in 1906,Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930. Check out this video about his life and his discovery:

  3. NASA retired its last Lockheed F-104 Starfighter in 1994. From pilot training to testing Space Shuttle thermal protection tiles, NASA utilized F-104 Starfighters as flight research and support aircraft for nearly 40 years.

  4. in 2006, the crew released a spare spacesuit - naming it SuitSat-1 - into orbit around the Earth. The Russian Orlan spacesuit was equipped with a radio transmitter so radio amateurs on Earth could tune in to this space signal.

  5. February is month! throughout the years, three African-American astronauts launched in space. Ron McNair, STS-41b (1984); Charlie Bolden, STS-60 (1994); and Bernard Harris STS-63 (1995).

    in 1971 Apollo 14 launched to the Moon. On this flight astronaut Stuart Roosa took 500 seeds. One is now a sycamore growing at our Visitor Center. Come to our model rocket launch Sunday (2/2, 1-2pm) & spot this mighty Moon tree on your way in! 🌔🌳

  10. in 1958, the first satellite launched by the United States, Explorer 1, was sent into space. It was sent to measure the radiation environment in Earth orbit. The radiation belts discovered by the spacecraft were later named the Van Allen Belts.

  13. in 2003, Columbia (STS-107) woke up to John Lennon's "Imagine". The crew shared their thoughts of the beauty of the earth and their hopes for peace (link below). Columbia and crew were lost during reentry on February 1.

  14. in 1986, the Challenger (STS-51L) crew perished when the vehicle exploded shortly after liftoff. We will never forget the brave crew or the lessons we learned at such a high cost.

  15. in 1967, we lost three members of our NASA family. 6:31 pm EST, a fire broke out in the Apollo Command Module during a pre-launch test. The Apollo 1 crew: Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee were killed. Apollo 1 was meant to be the first crewed Apollo spaceflight.

  16. in 2004 at 12:05 am EST, the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity landed on the Martian surface. In this composite photo you can see the deflated airbags used to cushion the landing.

  17. Voyager 2 was the first human-made object to flyby Uranus, making its closest approach in 1986 at a range of about 50,640 miles (81,500 km). As it approached Uranus, Voyager 2 discovered 10 new moons, including Ophelia and Cordelia.

  19. to astronaut and former Associate Administrator for Space Operations, Bill Readdy 🎉 🎉 Reads is a graduate, a veteran of three space flights - he commanded STS-79, the 4th Shuttle-Mir docking mission.
