    Today we honor explorer Jacques Cousteau on his birthday. In 1975, Cousteau and the oceanographic ship, Calypso, helped determine that the Landsat Satellite mission could measure the depth of shallow ocean waters. Read about his panel feature at CalTech:

    Jacobsen Glacier, Monarch Icefield or British Columbia retreat rate of ~47 m/yr 1987-2019, with an eqivalent lake expansion. Separation of two main tributaries almost complete.

    Just east of Phoenix, the Telegraph and Mescal fires are seen in this 7 image acquired yesterday. The two fires burned over 154,000 acres of land since their start last week.

    This Landsat 8 Collection 2 image was acquired over the Richat Structure near the western edge of the Sahara desert on April 25, 2020 and is shown as a natural color composite using the red, green, and blue bands (Bands 4,3,2).

    Landsat 9 is launching in September 2021, extending the program (which has been imaging Earth's surface for almost 50 years)! These satellites allow us to measure surface water extent, water quality, glaciers, and more.
