20 years ago, the Columbia crew lost their lives in the pursuit of exploration and discovery. Today, we lift up their legacies, and embrace NASA’s commitment to safety and the lessons we’ve learned. May we carry their spirit with us as we venture out to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

A big congratulations to @Astro_Raja on being nominated by @POTUS to be an Air Force brigadier general! Raja is the real deal – a test pilot, commander of the Crew-3 mission to the ISS, and all-around great person. We’re incredibly lucky that he’s sharing his talents with NASA.

Today, we remember our astronaut brothers and sisters who perished in their endeavor to explore for the benefit of all. Ad astra to the crews of Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia. We will continue to reach for new heights to ensure your sacrifice was not in vain. #NASAremembers
Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee are pictured in a mission simulator. On Jan. 27, 1967, the Apollo 1 crew perished when a fire engulfed their capsule during a pre-launch test.
Astronauts of the STS-51L mission are pictured at Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 28, 1986, on their way to board the space shuttle Challenger. From front to back: commander Francis R. (Dick) Scobee; mission specialists Judith A. Resnik and Ronald E. McNair; pilot Michael J. Smith; payload specialist Christa McAuliffe; mission specialist Ellison Onizuka; and payload specialist Gregory Jarvis. The entire crew died when a failed booster joint caused Challenger to break up 73 seconds after liftoff.
The STS-107 astronauts strike a ‘flying’ pose for their traditional in-flight crew portrait aboard the space shuttle Columbia. From the left (bottom row), are Kalpana Chawla, mission specialist; Rick D. Husband, mission commander; Laurel B. Clark, mission specialist; and Ilan Ramon, payload specialist. From the left (top row), are David M. Brown, mission specialist; William C. McCool, pilot; and Michael P. Anderson, payload commander. Ramon represented the Israeli Space Agency. On February 1, 2003, the seven crewmembers were lost when Columbia broke apart over north Texas during their return to Earth. This picture was on a roll of unprocessed film later recovered by searchers from the debris.
