For years, we’ve been answering the question: When will #NASAWebb launch? This morning, we answered that for the last time! Next up: Where is Webb? We’ve got an answer for that, too! See where Webb is on its million mile journey to #UnfoldTheUniverse: https://webb.nasa.gov/whereiswebb pic.twitter.com/edQ2XxNqyn

Arianespace's Ariane 5 rocket launches with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope onboard, Saturday, Dec. 25, 2021, from the ELA-3 Launch Zone of Europe’s Spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. The James Webb Space Telescope (sometimes called JWST or Webb) is a large infrared telescope with a 21.3 foot (6.5 meter) primary mirror. The observatory will study every phase of cosmic history—from within our solar system to the most distant observable galaxies in the early universe. Photo Credit: (NASA/Bill Ingalls)

Webb's unfolding sequence takes about 2 weeks, and it takes place as Webb travels out to its orbital destination of the second Lagrange point. Webb will insert itself into orbit about a month after launch!

Why does the unfolding of non-essential components begin so early and not after orbit insertion? Any chance of damage to unfolded components during cruise phase?

I'm not NASA but I believe it has been explained that there are a lot of systems checks that will be taking place in the first weeks before they can start to unfurl the sun shield so they definitely need a lot of power to charge the batteries. Solar arrays are def non-essential.

Enthusiasts are waiting for pictures that show things we've never seen before: The missing ninth planet or the big bang as it happened 😱😇

I think the 9th planet (Pluto) has already been seen. The 10th planet will def be too close to view with Webb. Big bang will always be impossible to see as no photons of light existed until 300k years after the big bang (re: ionization). Just tempering expectations... Lol
