Actually its a very small amount of Gold that is used, the main element that is used is actually Beryllium. Here is a great break down of how we get the raw beryllium and the process to turn it into the mirrors. https://www.nasa.gov/.../tec.../features/webb-beryllium.html …

Yep! The amount of gold on that 21+ foot diameter mirror is only about the mass of a golf ball, and the layer of it on the beryllium mirrors is thinner than a human hair!
