Tower stowed ✅ Lens cap removed ✅ Sunshield pallets stowed ✅ 3 more testing milestones have been completed for #NASAWebb! The world’s most complex & powerful space telescope is making big progress for its launch & million-mile journey later this year. https://go.nasa.gov/3ihiquc pic.twitter.com/WoEvzJSVih

Ball Aerospace technician Larkin Carey carefully removes Webb’s "lens cap" from the Aft Optics Subsystem which has kept the observatory’s sensitive instruments clean, contaminant-free, and protected from stray light throughout the integration and test process. Image credit: NASA/Chris Gunn

      1. The tower is a pipe structure that helps Webb maintain operating temperatures by separating its cold optics from its warm spacecraft bus. Fully extended, the tower reaches 10 ft in length! Recently tested for the last time, it is now lowered & locked into place for launch.pic.twitter.com/FvBIBtxhUS

Technicians work on testing the deployable tower assembly of the James Webb Space Telescope. The tower is a pipe-like structure that will extend in space to separate the "warm" and "cool" halves of the observatory. The mirror and sunshield of the observatory are seen folded in preparation for Webb being placed into its stowed flight configuration.

          2. Here, a @BallAerospace technician carefully removes Webb’s "lens cap," which has kept the observatory’s instruments protected and contaminant-free. With launch approaching, removing this cover gives engineers additional freedom in packing up the rest of the observatory.pic.twitter.com/apXpARpiEO

Ball Aerospace technician Larkin Carey carefully removes the "lens cap," or the cover for the Aft Optics Subsystem, from the black, nosecone-like structure in the center of the Webb telescope's primary mirror.

          3. Webb’s tennis court-sized sunshield is supported by its pallet structures, which can be seen partially lifted here. Now that Webb’s lens cap has been removed, engineers were able to finish the process of folding these pallets up into their final configuration for launch.pic.twitter.com/Y2IxIFepUh

The James Webb Space Telescope's sunshield pallets can be seen partially lifted in this image. These structures support the observatory's 5-layer sunshield, which has been folded for launch.
