#NASAWebb will inspire the globe with its launch this year. 🌍🌏🌎 We've got fun facts about the mission translated into 40+ languages! If we are missing a language you are fluent in, let us know if you'd like to help with a translation: https://go.nasa.gov/2Nb9bAk pic.twitter.com/Jc0Q4bk1Vv

Text on graphic: "James Webb Space Telescope - English
-Will be the premier space observatory for astronomers worldwide, extending the tantalizing discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope
-An international collaboration among NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency
-The largest telescope ever placed in space, 100 times more powerful than Hubble
-So big it has to fold origami-style to fit in the rocket and will unfold like a "Transformer" in space
-Has a 5-layer sunshield that protects the telescope from the infrared radiation of the Sun, Earth and Moon, like having sun protection of SPF 1 million
-With unprecedented infrared sensitivity, it will peer back in time over 13.5 billion years to see the first galaxies from the Big Bang
-Will orbit the Sun 1.5 million kilometers or 1 million miles from the Earth (Hubble orbits 500 kilometers above the Earth)"

Can/Will the James Webb Telescope use Earth's shadow in it's L2 point to help block sun? Or would that be negligible at that distance?

We will almost never be in Earth's shadow, actually!

Fortunately, we have a tennis court-sized sunshield which will do the job of shading the optics/instruments! Read more: https://jwst.nasa.gov/content/observatory/sunshield.html …pic.twitter.com/PGpqus5Lu6

That is so pickin' cool. Thank you for the reply! I guess I was wondering if there would happen to be rare alignment occasions where the Earth would help block the Sun for extra perfect looking opportunities into the dark starry void. ☀️🛡️🛰️✴️

"...So, it is possible to end up in darkness in the Earth's shadow from L2, but since Webb actually orbits the L2 point, its unshaded side with its solar array will typically be bathed in sunshine...." 2)

"...Webb will never be in total eclipse, and Webb should experience partial eclipse for only a few hours during its multi-year mission. A lot of flight dynamics calculations are driven by us making sure we won't end up in eclipse!" 3/3 Hope that helps!

Thanks for taking the time to craft a detailed answer! Very cool to humbly ask questions to an advanced team and get a quoted response from a project engineer! I also saw one of your .gif responses elsewhere that illustrated this nicely. Looking forward to seeing JWST in action!
