1. Using transits — the dimming of light from a star as its planet passes between us and the star — to see a planet’s atmosphere 
2. Using coronagraphs to block the light of bright stars and reveal faint planets

There are common methods used to find thousands of planets outside our solar system. We look for dips in a star’s light or wobbles in its orbit, block out its bright glare to see a dim planet, or even use strong gravity as a magnifying glass!
