It's #throwbackthursday - we wanted to share a view you may not have seen from October 2019, when technicians successfully fully deployed each of #NASAWebb's 5 uniquely-sized sunshield layers to the positions they will be in while orbiting the Sun a million miles away from Earth.pic.twitter.com/XpjBC1QPs4

Good job guys. We 💙 JWST. Given it will operate from L2, I have 2 questions. 1. Are there any methods through which JWST can avoid shield/mirror/system damage from micrometeorites ? 2. Are the layers able to protect the sensor from ionizing radiation from the sun (eg flares) ?

I hope nobody at Northrop-Grumman is going "uh-oh" right now 😅

Here's an answer from our deputy project manager. Shielding from flares/CMEs will come from the spacecraft bus and the telescope itself. The sunshield structure will partially shadow the instrument module too and offer more shielding than the membranes will.

I guess since the buss below the shield could manage via dissipation.Just don’t know how the layers would interact with one another during an esd. Either way, thanks @NASAWebb & John for taking time to answer. Webb rocks!
