Aren’t the movements much less strenuous in zero gravity? Do these motions put stress on the joints at sea level? Maybe I’m being overly sensitive, with my arthritis and all
Great question! Special gravity offsetting equipment was attached to Webb’s mirror to simulate the zero-gravity environment its mechanisms will have to operate in. Though it is only 30 seconds, the KC-135 ‘Vomit Comet’ could simulate the mechanism, though it would be a model of the engineering test or Webb itself, it could provide insight into any issues. Another idea, is to put the engineering test onto the ISS... $$$ I know, but worth it
