Heat shield will protect from sun keeping instruments operating at right temperatures but Isn't this "open" style telescope and its mirrors susceptible to threats like space debris and cosmic particles/matter?

We'll be 1.5 million km from Earth at the L2 point, not in Earth orbit - much less debris there. And we've tested and found micrometeoroids won't be an issue with the beryllium. https://jwst.nasa.gov/faq.html#micro
