May I ask a question, possibly foolish, but...If we detect planets by the decrease in light from their sun as they cross their sun, doesn't this method prevent us from detecting planets not on our line of sight plane? Our we possibly unaware of a large percentage of planets?
A couple thousand planets may be just a drop in the bucket when you think of what is out there, but it's an important start in a relatively new field of study. And with missions like @NASA_TESS and Webb, we will learn even more. 3/
