May I ask a question, possibly foolish, but...If we detect planets by the decrease in light from their sun as they cross their sun, doesn't this method prevent us from detecting planets not on our line of sight plane? Our we possibly unaware of a large percentage of planets?

Not foolish at all! And you are correct that the transit method only works for star-planet systems aligned so we can see those transits. Even so we've discovered nearly 3000 planets with this method so far. https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/docs/counts_detail.html … 1/
