#OTD 44 years ago, my twin Voyager 2 launched from Earth to tour the solar system. It’s incredible that we hold the record for longest lasting mission! You could say we have a thing for gold records.

Surely Pioneer 10 has been running longer, it's just that with current DSN capabilities its signal is too weak (last contact on 23 January 2003) to pick up. If there are upgrades the it may yet be possible to contact it again.

Pioneer 10's mission is complete. Originally designed for a 21-month mission to fly by Jupiter, it lasted more than 30 years. It sent its last signal to Earth in Jan. 2003 from a distance of 7.6 billion mi (12.23 billion km).

twins is my absolute favorite mission. That humans are able to build something that lasts that long and in that environment is inspiring.

Yes, and my sisters birthday is today, hip hip hurray. She now is the same age as me for a couple of weeks, until my birthday on september 5th. Not the same year as Voyager 1 and 2 though, that would be just silly.
