Lots of $$$$ recovered there. Elon wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t financially viable.

I'm wondering if they're going to give up, at least to some extent, on net recovery? It seems that soft, upright water landings in calm seas are just about as good.

The reason the fairing are expensive is non trivial and worth explaining: It would be easy to make them much cheaper but somewhat heavier. But because they're carried well into 2nd stage burn every kilo of fairing is worth perhaps as much as .4 kilo of payload.
-
The optimisation of the cost/weight is hard, but clearly SpaceX have done the math and it makes sense. By the way, in the edge case where the fairing is carried all the way to orbit, it's optimal cost per kilo more or less becomes equal to the cost of the payload per kilo.
