Feels like parts of the Agency want to lose SLS, but know the lawmakers won't allow it, so this is a way of diluting its future to force the hand. Ironically, those who think SLS dying would result in a blank check sent to Elon need to consider the aforementioned lawmakers.

Wasn't the only decent use of SLS left that of block II and beyond? What could it be use for now, other than wasting money?

Is this maybe a sign of maybe a general movement of NASA towards leaving the launcher business? Basically forcing Congress to give up supporting SLS once it's proved to be economically unviable in its Block 1 configuration?

False: The EUS was an upper designed for LEO heavy lifts, and gimped with tiny RL10 engines, and performance was terrible. Expect a new upper "advanced ICPS" probably based on Vulcan's Centaur V which will have much better performance for hipo lifts and be much cheaper.
-
Consider that an upper stage capable of lifting 150t to LEO must be 3X stronger (and heavier) than an upper designed to lift 50t to TLI. It also needs XX the thrust and an engine like J2's, where for a TLI launch Isp is EVERYTHING and RL10's work great.

SLS always has seemed over-ambitious and over-hyped. A classic case of 'not really thinking it through completely'. I don't as such believe that a blank cheque will be given to Elon, but that situations will arise such that a lot of cheques will be given to Elon out of panic.

I disagree. EUS is a waste of money. SLS block I is fine for now, and in the future, an ACES-based stage could do the same job for cheaper, so best to wait until then. Doing SLS block I only means saving money that can be used for a lander instead, which is what NASA is doing.

If SLS is a political reality that cannot be changed, then avoiding more R&D on it (as well as anything that could increase its annual budget) is the preferred option. It was never lack of launcher that prevented us from going back to the Moon, it was the lack of a lander.
