How can we ensure that the ISS will be left manned?
You can be sure Soyuz launches will be grounded indefinitely. Commercial Crew has to conduct a successful uncrewed launch next year before flying astronauts to the ISS (and no - they will not 'fast track' anything that involves crew safety).

How long can they prolong the current mission for?

The limiting factor is the service life of the Sojus currently attached to the station. I do believe (but no know exactly) that this is normally 6 months on orbit. Not sure if and how much this can/will be extended
