Yes, completely modified. We added a pressure bulkhead between the open telescope cavity and the pressurized cabin with our team.

Can SOFIA be used to observe eclipses? Can there be a solar shield added?

No, we only fly at night. Sunlight could damage the telescope.

Thought you could put a shade on it. Makes sense though. Thought, since most eclipses occur over oceans....

I don't get this... Isn't it too shaky in an airplane to see anything at all, especially an object so far away?

yeah kind of like turbulence right perhaps a gyroscope type instrument is at hand here ?
