If this mission does not unfold as planned what is the backup plan?

Use Curiosity more carefully. There really isn't a plan B for the landing. If it botches the landing- the mission is over. All the contingencies become an option only after it lands- before that, it *has* to work. There is no backup, no plan B, no second chances.

I remember from the Curiosity landing that there were three signals that need to be confirmed before it was announced that curiosity had landed. Is there going to be a similar procedure for this landing and if so what are those signals?

Very probably given its nearly the same design & vehicle. A few optimizations & improvements have been made but as far as the descent portion goes- its fairly identical as far as I'm aware so I would expect a similar situation for Percy.
