The balanced mass means that it will stay oriented correctly during landing, and therefore reach the ground right side up. Not necessarily a gentle process, with shielded atmospheric reentry and landing under rocket thrust.

Why are the wheels wrapped in tinfoil?

The wheels are temporarily wrapped with an anti-static material called Amerstat, it's for the protection of the rover. It will be removed before flight.
